Head of Electrical / Electronic Design

We are currently seeking a Head of Electrical/Electronic Design to apply engineering knowledge, line management experience and project management skills in planning, coordinating and delivering complex technical projects to required specification and timescales.

The successful candidate will use skill-sets to resolve highly complex technical challenges, apply existing knowledge in new ways and draw conclusions from comparative situations. They will also supervise and mentor engineers within the functional Electrical/Electronic Design team.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Deliver NPI program on-time and to budget for areas of responsibility
  • Agree project deliverables and key dates
  • Plan, direct and co-ordinate the work of electrical/electronic engineers and technical staff
  • Advise on technical problems
  • Review work of team members for technical accuracy, efficiency and adequacy
  • Undertake performance reviews
  • Make recommendations concerning the selection, training and evaluation of electrical/electronic engineers and technical staff
  • Mentor and coach the development of team members in their day-to-day duties and career aspirations
  • Interface with other areas of functional expertise, Mechanical Design and operational areas; Sales & Marketing, Operations, HR, Finance & IT

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • Expert in electrical and electronic design
  • Experience of designing electronic systems, design of PCB’s. Embedded real-time software knowledge desirable
  • Experience of mechatronic systems and precision motion control
  • Experience of designing electrical panels for test equipment to international wiring standards
  • Ability to take a design requirement from idea to concept, to prototype, to complete product
  • Experience of managing and successfully implementing NPD & NPI methodologies
  • Broad knowledge/awareness/love of technology. Automotive interest desirable, but not essential
  • Knowledge of CE compliance testing 
  • Technical degree in electrical / engineering (ideally Masters)
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience of managing a team of electrical / electronic engineers working on several diverse projects and applications
  • Experience of “best practice” from large corporations, but able to apply this in an SME, entrepreneurial & fast paced environment

  • Enjoys seeing prototypes to concept stage
  • Able to manage multi-work streams
  • Able to interface & network across the Company, including international locations and customers
  • Able to advise and influence people to agreed courses action without direct reporting lines
  • Willing to travel if required, including internationally
