What is driverless mileage accumulation testing?
Mileage accumulation testing is a crucial step in evaluating a vehicle’s long-term reliability and performance. It subjects vehicles to extended driving conditions either on-road, at proving grounds or using specialised laboratory test equipment to replicate real-world wear and tear. The process enables manufacturers to assess the impact of sustained use on components such as powertrains, suspension systems and chassis structures.
Traditional track-based mileage accumulation testing demands significant driver involvement, often requiring large teams to work long hours to cover the required distances. Driverless mileage accumulation testing eliminates these challenges by automating the process. Using driving robots ensures consistent and repeatable testing, prevents human error and allows for 24/7 operation, significantly accelerating test cycles.
Our driverless mileage accumulation solution
AB Dynamics’ driverless solution uses driving robots, software, telemetry and sophisticated controllers to conduct these tests without the requirement for a driver in the vehicle. It eliminates driver fatigue, accelerates testing and improves the accuracy and repeatability of test results.
Our driverless solution is comprised of three key elements: the driverless vehicle, the base station and the communication network. In addition, a LiDAR-based active collision detection system can be optioned to detect and avoid untracked objects on the test track.

Driverless vehicles
Driving for extended periods can be tiring and monotonous. Our solution makes vehicles driverless through either mechanical actuation, using pedal, steering and gearshift robots, or by-wire, using our Flex-0 CAN control system. Both robot actuation and by-wire solutions provide precise control of vehicle position, direction and speed, ensuring repeatability and accurate data.

Base station software
Operators manage and control vehicles using Ground Traffic Control (GTC) software from a fixed or mobile base station. GTC Pro’s live tracking and visualisation of up to 20 simultaneously running vehicles provides total visibility of vehicle activity and features a range of tools to streamline testing.
If an operator detects a potential hazard, they can remotely stop all driverless test traffic with the press of a button. GTC Pro also features real-time collision checking that automatically stops a vehicle if it anticipates a collision with another tracked vehicle.

Communications network
The system utilises a high-performance mesh radio network to provide reliable data transfer from vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-base. Cyber security is ensured through encryption, while the network can be set up with fixed infrastructure, or it can use mobile nodes to enable testing anywhere.
